The Foundation: The Steppingstone Foundation is a non-profit organization that designs and implements programs that demonstrate the clear and meaningful connection between education and opportunity for urban schoolchildren.
The Academy: In Boston, The Steppingstone Academy prepares fifth-, sixth- and eighth-grade students, who would not otherwise have the opportunity, to get into and succeed at some of the best independent schools and public exam schools in the area.
The Steppingstone Academy has three divisions that serve students entering at three different grade levels. Each division is comprised of:
* Admission: the recruitment, selection, and enrollment of Boston schoolchildren.
* Preparation: a 14-month academic component beginning the summer before a Scholar’s fifth or sixth grade year, and finishing in August of the following summer.
* Placement: the process through which the Steppingstone staff serves as a liaison between Scholars’ families and independent schools. Staff members work with Scholars and their families on all aspects of the public exam school application, independent school admission, and financial aid application processes.
* Support Services: a variety of services offered to students who have commenced from the 14-month preparation and placement components of The Steppingstone Academy to ensure strong academic and social transitions, and a positive overall school experience throughout middle school, high school, and in preparation for college.Basic Function: The Preparation and Placement Associate advises students and coordinates the day-to-day operations of the preparation and placement components of their division of The Steppingstone Academy.
Primary Responsibilities:
* Assist in day-to-day management of program site in after-school and summer sessions
* Advise a cohort of Scholars applying for admission to independent and public exam schools, including weekly advisory meetings, recommendation writing, and advocacy
* Assist families in applying for admission and financial aid at independent schools
* Teach classes in the academic year and summer sessions as needed
* Communicate with families as needed about student’s attendance, behavior, and academic progress
* Coordinate weekly community time activities
* Assist in curriculum development
* Assist in hiring of seasonal faculty
* Assist in organizing faculty meetings during the summer and academic year
* Assist in updating systems for tracking academic performance and family communications to aid in quarterly and annual department evaluation
* Participate in The Steppingstone Academy admission processQualifications:
* Proven track record in education and project management from an established and well-recognized community service organization or school
* 3-5 years of classroom teaching and/or work with middle school students
* Ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced and collaborative environment
* Commitment to ongoing learning and professional growth
* Demonstrated understanding and commitment to working with diverse populations in an urban environment
* Familiarity with Boston public exam and/or independent schools highly desirable
* Knowledge of language other than English beneficial, especially Spanish, Haitian-Creole or Vietnamese
* Experience and comfort with FileMaker Pro, a plusReports to: Division Director
