On October 28th, over 250 education and youth development professionals joined city and state leaders to develop a unified voice on after-school and expanded learning policy. The symposium featured Speaker of the House Robert DeLeo and Mayor Thomas M. Menino, a synopsis of the latest research presented by Priscilla Little of the Harvard Family Research Project, a panel of field leaders, and working draft of a policy platform.
In his address, Mayor Thomas M. Menino released the city's Education Pipeline plan, which outlines a "birth through college success" strategy. In urging attendees to use data to track results, Menino advised, “Let’s use that data to hold ourselves accountable for results. We can have flexibility in approaches, but we need to shoot for the same goals.”

Also during the symposium Boston After School & Beyond released a video that highlights Boston's approaches to expanded learning. The video demonstrates how schools work in partnership with community organizations to meet the developmental needs of childrenat the elementary, middle and high school levels.
Field leaders from across the state joined the panel, Successful Approaches to Afterschool and Extended Learning in Boston and Massachusetts, to begin a conversation about developing a statewide policy platform. Moderated by Priscilla Little of the Harvard Family Research Project, the discussion featured Tiffany Cooper Gueye, Chief Executive Officer of Building Educated Leaders for Life, Lynda Feeney of the Hull Public Schools, Claudio Martinez, Executive Director of Hyde Square Task Force, Thomas Stella, Everett Public Schools Assistant Superintendent and Fitchburg Mayor Lisa Wong.
