Professional Development

The key to high-quality, out-of-school time programming is the skill level and stability of the staff. For programs to meet their potential as places where young people from all backgrounds thrive, staff must be well-trained, well-compensated and retained from year to year.

By serving as the convener of Achieve-Boston, a collaborative effort to build a professional development system for out-of-school time staff, Boston Beyond is helping to ensure that program staff at all levels have access to comprehensive training and educational opportunities that enable them to strengthen their skills, develop their knowledge base and advance along their chosen career path.

Developed in partnership with Achieve-Boston, the School-Age & Youth Development (SAYD) is an eighteen month pilot program to test a training and credentialing system for after-school and youth workers aspiring to greater leadership in the out OST sector. Pilot participants have the opportunity to earn nine cost-free college credits and take forty-five hours of free community-based training - all of which will have a direct and immediate impact on their work with children, youth, and families. In addition, the program includes incentives designed to reduce staff turnover during and after the pilot period.
