  On Wednesday, April 25, Boston City Councilor At-Large John Connolly, chair of the Council’s Education Committee, honored five Boston Public School Partner Organizations with resolutions recognizing their innovative work in Boston’s schools.  These organizations are notable for their exceptional programs that bring environmental and music education, playtime and outdoor learning and tutoring programs to Boston Public Schools.

Recently I had an extraordinary opportunity to chaperone and coach eight high school basketball players from seven Boston high schools on a trip to Beijing, China.  The purpose of the trip was for the eight BPS high school student/athletes to participate in a basketball tournament as part of President Obama’s 100,000 Strong Initiative.  
On December 9, 2011, leaders from the state and city government, Boston Public Schools, local and national funders, and community program providers came together at the Boston Summer Learning Forum. Speakers included Mayor Menino, Dr. Carol Johnson (Boston Public Schools), Kristin McSwain (Boston Opportunity Agenda), Ed Pauly (Wallace Foundation), and Jennifer Sloan McCombs (RAND Corporation).
This video features the perspectives of school leaders, teachers, and students from the Marshall Elementary School in Dorchester and Orchard Gardens K-8 School in Roxbury, which used Thompson Island this summer as an extension of their classrooms.  The schools were part of a larger, citywide effort called the Boston Summer Learning Project, which included 1,433 students, 31 schools, and 15 community partners this summer.  Launched by the Boston O
According to Thompson Island, "The Summer Connections Program is a unique learning alternative to summer school for Boston Public School students. Summer Connections offers an innovative blend of academics and enrichment activities while immersing students in the natural world of the Island's forests, beaches, meadows and marshes. Thompson Island partnered with the National Park Service, Orchard Gardens K-8 School and John Marshall Elementary School to serve 160 students over the 2011 summer season.
Tobin K-8 School students at Sociedad Latina's Summer Seedlings Program filmed and edited the following documentary about how they spent their summer.  Watch their video to observe the skills these motivated students honed during their Summer Learning Program!
On August 10, 2011, Boston Beyond joined Mayor Menino and others on a visit to Sociedad Latina's implementation of the Summer Learning Project, which served students from the Tobin school in the BPS district. The Boston Neighborhood Network filmed the video above during the visit.
At the 2011 Achieving, Connecting, Thriving Leadership Conference, co-convened by PEAR and Boston After School & Beyond, Mayor Thomas M. Menino announced the expansion of the Summer Learning Initiative to include 1,500 fourth- to 12th-graders in Boston. This initiative is a collaborative effort amongst the city, the school department and community-based organizations to decrease summer learning loss.
