MENTOR's SafetyNET Program

In partnership with the FBI, the MENTOR organization has developed a program to make nationwide FBI fingerprint-based background checks available to any mentoring program in the country. MENTOR/National Mentoring Partnership has been working to expand the world of quality mentoring for over 10 years. Through SafetyNET, each FBI background check costs only $18. There is a turnaround time of approximately 5 business days from the time the background check materials are received by MENTOR until the fitness determinations are emailed to the program from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC). Created by Congress, the SafetyNET pilot is part of a longer-term effort to create a permanent workable system for obtaining criminal background checks on volunteers who work with children.
