Good Sports

Good Sports strives to increase the participation of urban youth in sports, fitness, and recreational programs. Good Sports is an entrepreneurial non-profit organization that helps make sports and fitness equipment accessible to young people throughout Massachusetts. To accomplish this, GoodSports develops partnerships with sports equipment organizations to secure donations and distribute that equipment to youth in need. Equipment is distributed to youth and athletic programs in low-income, urban areas throughout Massachusetts.

Junior Jocks Program

Good Sports and Sports Radio WEEI 850 AM invite youth sports programs to apply for support from the Junior Jocks Drive. Each year, the Junior Jocks program holds an on-air drive with WEEI to generate support for youth sports organizations throughout Massachusetts. The selected organizations will be featured on WEEI 850 AM during the drive, with the funds raised used to meet the need for sports equipment requested through the application process. Programs raise funds for sports equipment, as well as gain exposure for their cause. To be considered, programs must be operating an organized sport or recreation program in basketball, baseball, football, hockey, or soccer that serves disadvantaged youth ages five to 18 years old.

Who's eligible
Youth sports programs located in Boston, Lawrence, and Lowell, including town and city leagues, Boys and Girls Clubs, YMCAs, and schools and community centers with sports programs.

Adaptive Equipment Grant

In an effort to increase the participation of youth with physical and cognitive disabilities in sports, recreation and fitness activities Good Sports has teamed up with BOSTnet in a special initiative to provide adapted equipment to programs to promote access for all. Good Sports and BOSTnet have a goal of supporting $75,000 to $100,000 of requests for adapted equipment. Adapted equipment can be a small percentage of your request or can be the entire request. Applications are reviewed on a rolling cycle; however, applicants must apply at least 12 weeks prior to the start of their season/program to ensure that evaluations can be made and equipment can be distributed in a timely manner.

If you have questions about inclusive programming and/or adapted equipment requests, you can receive technical assistance from the Lead to Opportunities for Youth with Disabilities (LOYD) initiative at BOSTnet by emailing Susan Tufts at tufts@bostnet.org.

Equipment Grants

As Good Sports enters its 5th year supporting youth sports organizations there will be some changes to the equipment grant application process. Starting January 1, 2009, a new application will be available on the Good Sports website at http://www.goodsports.org/equipmentgrants.shtml. Any applications postmarked or sent after December 31, 2008 will be subject to the new guidelines, and only the new application will be accepted by Good Sports after that date.
