Recently I had an extraordinary opportunity to chaperone and coach eight high school basketball players from seven Boston high schools on a trip to Beijing, China. The purpose of the trip was for the eight BPS high school student/athletes to participate in a basketball tournament as part of President Obama’s 100,000 Strong Initiative.

On January 20th, BYEN's Everyday Explorer AmeriCorps members will be participating in an organized service project with Boston Cares for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. The members will join other volunteers in Boston for a day of community service activities at the Curley School in Jamaica Plain.

According to Thompson Island, "The Summer Connections Program is a unique learning alternative to summer school for Boston Public School students. Summer Connections offers an innovative blend of academics and enrichment activities while immersing students in the natural world of the Island's forests, beaches, meadows and marshes. Thompson Island partnered with the National Park Service, Orchard Gardens K-8 School and John Marshall Elementary School to serve 160 students over the 2011 summer season.
